Togen Daiko was formed in April 1996, at the Oxnard Buddhist Temple in Oxnard, California.  We had our public debut just two months later at the Oxnard Obon Festival.

The type of taiko practice is "Japanese-American Buddhist Taiko."  Taiko can be found in many Buddhist ceremonies but not the type of mass drumming we play. For many temples here in the United States, this very traditional Japanese instrument has evolved into an extension of temple activity.

Taiko teaches us ideas and attitudes of Buddhism.  Through taiko we learn about joy, commitment, ego devotion, cooperation, honesty, accomplishment, etc.  The taiko represents the ideal world, the taiko player represents man in the real world, and the "bachi" or drumsticks represent the connecting link, of Buddhist teachings, between the two worlds.
